Important Construction Message
A Special Message from the Port Washington Public Library Regarding Construction Protests
The Port Washington Public Library apologizes for the disruption from the ongoing demonstration by a local labor organization, DC 9, whose workers were not hired by the contractors currently performing work at the Library. Please be assured that despite misleading signs and messages from DC 9, the Library has done everything right.
For those unaware, the Library is in the middle of a building façade renovation project that is vital to our infrastructure. The current work at the Library is being performed by reputable, responsible, and unionized contractors. Perplexingly, DC 9 is demonstrating outside a job that is being performed by other unionized workers, unaffiliated with DC 9. The workers onsite receive wages and benefits above area standards. The Library arranged this after a careful construction bidding process, in accordance with legal and ethical standards, with a focus on the highest possible quality and most competitive cost.
The Library’s contractors have filed legal actions to compel DC 9 to cease its activity and hold it responsible for any damages it has caused.
The Library intends to complete this important project in the coming weeks, using the currently employed unionized workers. We appreciate your continued patience and support. Please feel free to contact Library Administration at library@pwpl.org or 516-883-4400 ext. 1100 if you have any further questions.
Sincerely,
Keith Klang, Library Director & The Library Board of Trustees
