Born in 1927, New York native Jerry Schatzberg’s entree to photography began as an assistant to renowned photographer William Helburn before setting out on his own as a freelance photographer. Since then he has straddled the worlds of fashion photography and cinema to become a critically acclaimed artist in both realms. Regarded as one of the leading figures in the “Hollywood Renaissance,” his introspective films such as “Panic in Needle Park (1970) and Scarecrow (1973), both starring Al Pacino, has earned him acclaim as a respected contemporary filmmaker. Similarly, Schatzberg’s photographs seem to also fall inline with his directing style. His intimate and often intense portraits of artists, actors and fashion elite – one of his most famous of musician Bob Dylan on the cover of his album Blond on Blonde<\/em>, demonstrate his mastery of his craft. His photographs have been published in Vogue, McCall’s, Esquire, Glamour and Life magazine.<\/span><\/p>\n
