Bill Silano

“I’ve always had the nature of an explorer, putting my foot into uncharted ground, observing, absorbing, responding, and avoiding repetition. Following Brodovitch’s maxim, ‘If you look in the camera viewfinder and see a picture you’ve seen or taken before, don’t take it.’ These words have always stuck with me and inspired me to take my work to a new higher and unique level.”
– Bill Silano
Bill Silano (1934-2014) was a world-renowned fashion and editorial photographer. Based in New York City, he lived and worked at his studio above the Gramercy Arts Theater from the 1960s through mid-1980s, where he often used the roof as a background for his shoots. Silano’s innovative use of the wide-angle lens, light and color, bold scale, and desolate landscapes brought a surrealistic edge to his editorial shoots and captured the spirit of the era, propelling him to the heights of the fashion photography world. His work has been featured on many Harper’s Bazaar covers, as well as in spreads for Italian, French, and British Vogue, French Elle, Glamour, and Town and Country.
