“I WISH FOR CHRISTMAS I COULD GIVE ONE OF FERNAND’S PRINTS TO EVERY PHOTOGRAPHER WHO WORKS WITH OUR MODELS. IF THEY LIVED WITH THESE PICTURES, THEY COULD LEARN HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE.”
– Eileen Ford
Fernand Fonssagrives (1910 – 2003) was one of the greatest French fashion photographers of the 20th century and was known as one of the creators of what came to be known as Beauty Photography in the early 1940s. His first wife, model Lisa Fonssagrives, initially inspired him to pick up a camera, and she served as his muse for many years, featuring in some of his most memorable work. Over the course of his career Fonssagrives shot for all the major fashion publications, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Town & Country, and was at one point the highest paid photographer in New York.
