What is the Common Core?

The Common Core State Standards is a national initiative adopted by New York State. The purpose of the Common Core is to provide a single set of clear and consistent educational standards in math and English Language Arts for the entire United States. Currently 45 of the 50 states have adopted the standards. According to the New York State PTA and New York State United Teachers, there are key changes that are now being implemented in the classrooms for all K-12 students.

Changes in ELA (English Language Arts)  include:

  • Reading as much non-fiction as fiction
  • Reading more challenging material closely
  • Interpreting reading using evidence
  • Increasing academic vocabulary

Changes in math include:

  • Learning more about fewer, key topics
  • Using the math skills learned in class in the real world
  • Building math skills within and across grade levels
