Celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the USA with special historical programs, books, films, exhibit and more presented by the Port Washington Public Library. Rhonda Kay and the Backstage Trio

Join Rhonda Kay and the Backstage Trio as they present: "The Best of Broadway and Jazz Standards" which features a great mix of the best of Broadway songs, iconic jazz standards and songs from the Great American Songbook. For the past decade Rhonda Kay has performed for Long Island and New York City audiences and delighted them with her vocal talents. She will be joining forces with the Backstage Trio, some of New York’s most talented and experienced musicians. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Earth Day Celebration 2026

PWPL invites you to our annual Earth Day celebration! Bach to Rock bands will kick things off with live music from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Representatives from the Town of North Hempstead, along with many Port Washington environmental organizations, will be on site from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., sharing information about their latest sustainability initiatives. Bring your kids to the children’s table to create a fun, eco-friendly craft. The Library will also be offering environmentally conscious giveaways, including native plants. Most of all, enjoy the music and discover meaningful ways you can make a difference in building a healthy, sustainable community. The Earth Day celebration is funded by the PWPL Friends of the Library.

Pete Fornatale: Rock Radio Revolutionary

Pete Fornatale (1945-2012) was a longtime Port Washington resident and FM radio pioneer known for his eclectic music taste, insightful interviews with artists, and outspoken but measured commentary on the zeitgeist of the day. Over his nearly 50-year career as a DJ at New York stations WFUV, WNEW, and K-Rock, he inspired countless artists, industry players, and radio listeners. An exhibit of photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia celebrating Pete’s life, work, and far-reaching influence is now on display in the History Center Annex.
Victoria Selbach – “We Are”

On view in The Adler Gallery from March 4 - April 30.

This exhibition features Victoria Selbach’s vibrant We Are paintings—large-scale silhouettes formed from natural imagery that celebrate our shared humanity and connection to nature. The series encourages us to look beyond differences, unite in protecting one another and the planet, and inspire the next generation of caretakers. A former Port Washington resident now based in rural Connecticut, Selbach is known for her empowering, lifesize depictions of contemporary women. Her work explores personal identity, generational feminine legacy, and collective responsibility. She has exhibited internationally, including at the Heckscher Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Museu Europeu d'Art Modern (MEAM).

Revolutionary Reads Sponsored by the Ruth D. Bogen Memorial Fund

Join fellow readers at the library for an engaging discussion of 1776 by David McCullough on Tuesday April 7th at 1:30 pm.
In this masterful book, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence—when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper.
Based on extensive research in both American and British archives, 1776 is a powerful drama written with extraordinary narrative vitality. It is the story of Americans in the ranks, men of every shape, size, and color; farmers, schoolteachers, shoemakers, no-accounts, and mere boys turned soldiers. And it is the story of the King’s men, the British commander, William Howe, and his highly disciplined redcoats who looked on their rebel foes with contempt and fought with a valor too little known.
Written as a companion work to his celebrated biography of John Adams, David McCullough’s 1776 is another landmark in the literature of American history.
