1000 Books Before Kindergarten

  /    /  1000 Books Before Kindergarten

We invite you to participate in this wonderful program which encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before he or she begins kindergarten.  The concept is simple, but the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to read 1,000 books (yes, you can repeat books!) before your child starts kindergarten.

Does it sound hard?  If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read 365 books in a year; that is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, you have more time than you think (so get started)!

Why participate in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program? Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood. Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Most importantly, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.

Port Washington Public Library is happy to support you on this journey.  We’ll help you track your progress and provide incentives along the way.  Sign up is easy, just stop by the Children’s Library service desk or click here to get started.  After reading 100 books come in to receive a tote bag; the perfect accessory to carry your books home from the library!

*You can participate in 1000 Books Before Kindergarten without leaving home.  Email us at child@pwpl.org with a photo of your child’s finished booklet, and we’ll send you a copy of the next booklet to print at home.
